Sandwich Junkie Statement

Nearly 10 years ago, two guys set out to change the way Seattle looked at the sandwich. If you are receiving this then you know we hit that benchmark. After all there is nothing more comforting, pleasurable and of course disputed than a great sandwich. Delicatus grew from the efforts of our supportive friends and family, flourished with some amazing staff over the years, and of course thrived because of our beloved Sandwich Junkies. We cannot thank you enough for the years of support to make Delicatus what it is today.

We have deliberated at depths regarding the future of our business and many things have come to light. Our conviction has been tested over the years, but never did we question our commitment to Delicatus, our staff, our community or our supporters. That is why we email you today:

The original Delicatus in Pioneer Square is shuttering its doors October 18th, 2019

While we take the opportunity to adjust our sites on how Delicatus can be more impactful in the future, we will still be serving up the best damn sandwiches in Seattle at our other location.

We expect to see you there!

Why you may ask?

Truth be told, it has been a very difficult 10 years. We opened our Flagship location in Pioneer Square at the onset of the Great Recession harboring no illusions of the difficulties unique to our historic neighborhood. We welcomed the opportunity to be a force for change and improvement as we rightfully believed this neighborhood was ripe for positive change. We knew of the major construction projects that would inevitably need to be addressed and witnessed 1st Ave. torn up 3 times in 10 years. We battle daily with the inability of our City Officials to improve and promote any level of public civility in our Historic District while leaving small businesses to struggle through a never ending wave of civic construction projects with zero support. We have maneuvered through a City Council agenda that has indeed placed small, local businesses on the brink of extinction as we struggle to make the necessary adjustments to our business models. While we support most of the policies coming down to support low income wage workers, we outright reject the methods in which our City government has pursued its implementation often lumping small independent businesses in the same sweeping condemning statements directed at huge corporations who are successful at the expense of their workers. Couple that with landlords whom have zero concern for tenant retention as a finished waterfront inches closer to completion. Just look around The Square; the uniqueness of our independent food operations is falling by the waste side every day and being replaced by corporate food companies that Seattleites would not have supported only a few years ago. The market has indeed changed…

What’s Next-

First off, we have zero regrets and we are looking forward to the steps ahead. Over the next 2 months we seek to celebrate the dedication and efforts of those that have seen us through the last 10 years of being the best damn sandwich shop in Seattle with our beloved sandwich junkies. Our decision to vacate our Pioneer Square location does not mean we are giving up, in fact quite the contrary as the knowledge gained from our experience and success over the past 10 years is invaluable. We will be restructuring the business and refocusing our efforts on a sustainable model that provides better growth opportunities for our staff, a seamless guest experience and quality unrivaled in the deli market.

Whether you are a lawyer from the courthouse, a local artist, a small start-up, a Square rat, a pedi-cab operator, a musician, a software developer, a politician, Sounder Fans, the 12th Man (sorry Mariner Fans) or the foodie frequenting our Dinner Series, you ALL sought refuge in this space we call Delicatus.

So please join us on October 10th to celebrate a decade of great food, great times and great people.
